Chapter 8

Nick

“Somebody’s burning the midnight oil.”

I looked up from the stacks of folders on my desk, surrounding my open laptop, to see Jasper standing in the doorway. I’d been so immersed in my research, I’d lost track of time. I glanced out the window, noticing the sun had gone down and the streetlights had turned on. A growl from my stomach reminded me I hadn’t even stopped to eat dinner.

I cleared my throat. “Yeah, just trying to get some work done. What’s up, Jas?”

He moved into my office, hands in his pockets, and slumped into a chair in front of my desk. “I noticed your light was on, thought I’d see if you wanted to grab a late dinner before heading home.” He cocked his head slightly, silently questioning what I was still doing here at this hour.

I ran a hand through my hair and grimaced. “Thanks for the offer, but I should finish up here.”

“You’re gonna make me ask, aren’t you?” Jasper nodded slightly at the piles of paperwork on my desk.

I sighed. “I’m trying to find something–anything–that will help me figure out a compromise with Amelia.”

“What are you looking for?” Jasper asked, picking up one of the folders.

“I have no fucking clue,” I said, picking up a folder and tossing it to the side. “She wants us to move our operation. Dad doesn’t want to. We’re at an impasse, Jasper, and I don’t know what the hell I’m supposed to do.” I didn’t mention to him that I also wanted to salvage any chance I had at a relationship with Amelia by putting this thing behind us, once and for all.

He gave me a sympathetic look and picked up another folder, opening it and skimming the contents. “Let me help you. Two sets of eyes are better than one.”

I smiled weakly. That was Jasper, always willing to help. “Thanks, Jas. I don’t even know what to tell you to look for, though.”

He sat the folders down and motioned for me to turn my laptop towards him. “You keep going through the files. I’ll log into the archives and run some queries. And in the meantime, why don’t you have some dinner delivered since it looks like we’re pulling an all-nighter.” He grinned as he took control of my computer.
